Fun Fact #1 – How many of you know that the Atlantic end of the Straits of Gibraltar are 2 to 3 meters higher than the Mediterranean end? Not too many I would guess. The reason for this is that the waters of the Med evaporate at a rate which is larger than the inflow from rivers, streams and rainfall. The net result is that water from the Atlantic “pours” into the Med at all times.
This also explains our slow progress as we fight the incoming currents to reach the Atlantic.
