Morpheus is back in the US!

Morpheus is back in the US (San Diego) today after 4 months in Costa Rica, Ensenada, and transitioning between the two. Uncle Dan, Deb’s brother, and Uncle Bob, Jim’s brother, completed the leg from Ensenada to San Diego this morning at about 1am. This passage will be known as “The Uncle’s Cruise”. It was reported to be an easy, beautiful passage, with NO wind and glassy water when Bob had to dock the boat for the first time, ever. Well done, Bob!

Returning Morpheus to the US has been a frustrating, hot, sweaty job, requiring the efforts of more people than I can thank…but I’ll try. It’s a true testament to the kind of man Jim was that so many of our friends and family reached out to help bring Morpheus home.

Pete McCormick, who’s been spearheading the whole effort, and who single-handedly got Morpheus the last slip on the last boat transport ship of the 2024 hurricane season.

Uncle/Brother Bob who flew to Costa Rica to get Morpheus ready to get on the ship, in hot, muggy, gross wet weather.

Heather Wendell Svec (who is Patrick’s Godmother’s niece) who is a professional Boat Captain, based in Ensenada, who took possession of Morpheus when she was discharged from the ship, coordinated a haul out, bottom paint, refloating her and then tied her up next to her own boat/barge, and kept an eye on her until we could get all the above done, plus a survey and new boat insurance sorted.

Uncle/Brother Dan and Uncle/Brother Bob, Again, for taking the bus to Ensenada, getting the boat ready to go offshore, then bringing her to San Diego (before the Federalies caught a clue and impounded her for no good reason, other than they could.)

R.A.T.S.A.S.S. CEO Gibb Kane and CTO Pete McCloskey for answering the phones and helping us figure out why the wind instruments weren’t showing on the displays, Spot tracking issues, and making sure Starlink was up and running.

Kjeld Hestehave for arranging dock space at SDYC for a quick layover.

Torbin Benson for flying down to SD and helping move Morpheus on her next (to last?) leg towards home and coordinating dock space at RYC.

I’ll update the Blogg when we know when she’s coming through the gate and her welcome home party. These will not be on the same day. They should be this month.

  1. Outstanding news, and yes what an amazing (though not surprising) testament to both Jim’s seamanship and humanity that such a terrific cast of characters would drop everything to help make Morpheus’ homecoming possible. Bravo!
