Virgin Gorda (12/23-???)

Here we sit in the North Sound of Virgin Gorda awaiting the arrival of our friends and delivery crew. Deb and I have spent a lot of time here since 2010, and it is undoubtedly our favorite location in the Caribbean.

It has a great combination of beautiful protected anchorages, restaurants when you want one (BEYC and Saba Rock), snorkeling, kitesurfing, and all kinds of fun!

Saba Rock will be the official kickoff location for our westbound delivery via the canal to Mexico.

We overnighted here from St. Martin on Dec. 23rd. Once again, very light winds so again we motored almost all the way arriving around 6am as the sun began to light up the island. Beautiful!

Christmas and New Years brings the crowds and the boat-watching is pretty incredible.

We get to watch the charter boats motor through the anchorage at 7 knots racing to their moorings normally with 3-4 people on the bow offering suggestions to the captains. Always entertaining as long as they are a good distance away from us. A bit less entertaining if they are nearby.

Also, the sheer number and beauty of the super yachts that pull into the North Sound at this time of year is amazing. They clearly are enjoying a very different experience than we are.

We’ve been here now just over two weeks, it’s been a very busy time with projects that need to happen before we leave. Finally, today, three days before our friends arrive, my chore list is down to optional items!! (But that leaves three days for something else to break!)

The biggest project was removing the old cabling and sailing instruments and replacing them with the new equipment that I flew back to St. Maarten with. That will be the subject of my next post!

Here are some photos taken over the past couple of weeks…

  1. You have friends!? Haha, jk, 3 days and counting, can’t wait! As Hooper famously said after seeing the shark in Jaws, “We’re going to need a bigger bottle of rum”
